In honor of my Caught Dead in Wyoming mystery series, my assistant Gabriella Samuels is writing for my newsletter and blog a series of consumer tips inspired by TV reporter Elizabeth Margaret Danniher.
Here on the east coast of the U.S., we have experienced a winter season with snow storms and frigid temperatures. And winter is not quite over yet.
For added warmth, many people rely on space heaters. Space heater misuse, however, poses a potentially fatal risk. The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission “estimates that space heaters, including both fixed and portable heaters, are associated with about 21,800 residential fires every year.”
Keep these space heater safety tips in mind:
- Carefully read the instructions and warnings of any space heater you buy
- Keep space heaters on low, flat, stable surfaces and away from carpets
- NEVER plug a space heater into an extension cord or power strip; plug it directly into the wall outlet
- Place space heaters at least 3 feet from flammable materials (curtains, paper, furniture)
- Remember to turn off space heaters when not in use
- If the space heater shows any signs of malfunction, discontinue use and replace it
Though space heaters are safer than ever, caution is always advised. For more information on space heater safety check out this article by The New Times and always research before purchasing.
